In reality, buyers back out, inspections surface issues that require negotiation, and lender timelines slip. If your start date is firm, you can't absorb two or three months of uncertainty and then a last-minute complication.

Some employers offer relocation assistance that includes a home sale component, either a buyout offer through a relocation management company or a lump-sum reimbursement.
